The following guidelines will help you choose the right type of contact lenses for your eyes and your needs.
Hard Contacts Vs. Soft Contacts
There are two very basic lens types: hard and soft. The majority of contact wearers opt for soft lenses. They are generally less expensive and more comfortable. In fact, only 10 percent of contact wearers use hard lenses. However, hard lenses could be a better option if you have a strong astigmatism, are trying to slow down myopia progression, don’t see well after refractive surgery, or if you had/have corneal disease.
Length of Wear
If you choose soft lenses, the next step is to consult with your eye doctor on how long you would like your lenses to last. These days, there are multiple options to choose from, all depending upon your eyes and your lifestyle.
Daily Wear
Commonly used contacts are reusable daily wear lenses. With this lens type, you can remove your contacts at the end of the day for over-night cleaning and reuse them the next day.
Reusable lenses have different lengths of wear before they need to be replaced. Typically, they last anywhere from two weeks to one month. To keep your eyes healthy, be sure to consult your optometrist and replace your contacts as directed.
Daily Disposable
If you’re not able to spend the time caring for your reusable contacts or you suffer from severe allergies, dailies are a great option. Each day, you’ll don a new pair of contacts. Then, at the end of the day, you can throw them away.
Though daily disposables require the least maintenance, they can be more expensive than other lens types. Be sure to weigh convenience over price and determine which is more important to you.
Extended Wear
Extended wear contacts can be worn anywhere from 7 to 30 days, depending on the brand and style. You can wear these lenses overnight, but you will need to remove and clean them as directed.
Keep in mind that while you can wear these lenses overnight, we don’t recommend it. Continuously wearing your contacts can be unsafe for some people, leading to problems like scratches, abrasions, or corneal ulcers.
Single-Vision Vs. Multi Focal
If you need vision correction for either nearsightedness or farsightedness, then single-vision lenses are the clear choice. If, however, you require glasses for both reading and distance, you could benefit from multi-focal contacts.
There are two options for correcting up-close and distance vision impairment at the same time: multifocal lenses or mono-vision. Multifocal lenses are weighted, so when you slip them onto your eye, the contacts will fall into place with distance correction on the top and reading correction on the bottom.
Mono-vision means one eye wears a contact lens that corrects distance while the other eye wears one for nearsightedness. While this type of vision correction can require some time to adapt, many people prefer it over the weighted multifocal lenses.
